Study of Vibrations in JCB Dieselmax Engines

This resource, from Mathematics for Engineering Exemplars, shows the application of mathematics when designing and developing engines. As well as considering the power requirements for a given application, the vibration of the system should be considered. The engine installation in a machine must ensure that the natural frequency of the system (the frequency at which a system will naturally oscillate when set into motion) is not equal to a typical excitation frequency. This resource uses quadratic equations, differentiation and the matrix method to solve simultaneous equations in mechanical engineering. Detailed notes and examples are provided and there are extension activities for students to complete, together with learning outcomes and assessment criteria. The resource is supported by JCB Power Systems Limited.
