Chemical Engineering

This is one of the 14 Background Books published for Stage III of the Nuffield Chemistry Sample Scheme. The books were highly illustrated and designed to be attractive.

This book starts with a story of the discovery of a new solvent and the stages in the development of a new process to make it on a large scale. The book ends with a diagrammatic account of some of the main unit operations of importance in chemical engineering.

This book was published in 1967. References to slide rules and the all-male environment are characteristic of the times. There is no mention of atom economies or green chemistry but, even so, the book is still worth reading as an account of the team work and wider issues involved in making a success of a new industrial process.
