How We Look

Published by the Wellcome Trust, the 'Big Picture' explores issues around biology and medicine. This issue looks at the interplay between the biology that sculpts our form and the culture that interprets and adapts it.

It asks what we mean by ‘normal’, what beauty is and how such concepts influence the way we live. It looks at why we take the form we do and considers what we might look like in the future.
There is an associated activity which is designed to increase students’ understanding and awareness of recent developments in biochemistry and the surrounding ethical, social and moral issues. The activity requires students to research and produce an advertising video for a beauty product, highlighting the science behind its development. The competition element of this activity is now closed.
