Dengue Virus Replication and Transmission

Produced by the Wellcome Trust, these animations take a detailed look at the molecular mechanisms that allow the dengue virus to subvert the cells of its mammalian host, allowing it to replicate and spread. Dengue is an example of an RNA virus.

Being bitten by a mosquito carrying the dengue virus can lead to a broad range of symptoms including fever, headache, a rash, muscle and joint pain. If untreated, it can progress to the more severe dengue haemorrhagic fever.

The first animation illustrates how the virus uses its RNA to produce viral proteins within a host cell's cytoplasm. The second animation looks at how the disease is spread by mosquito bites and the effects the virus has on the human body.

The animations are quite detailed and suitable for students following post-16 courses in biology or health.
