Basic Algebra

Three RISP activities designed to introduce or consolidate basic algebraic skills.

Brackets Out, Brackets In: students are asked to insert integers into a statement containing brackets in order to obtain as many different results as they can. This activity can be used to introduce, consolidate or revise simple expanding brackets or factorising.

Arithmetic Simultaneous Equations requires students to use six consecutive terms from any arithmetic sequence to form a pair of simultaneous equations. Students then have to say what happens when the equations are solved. Students use skills such as proof, mathematical language and argument.

Advanced Arithmogons gives students the opportunity to practice forming and reversing a series of different mathematical relationships.
