Design Engineer: Chris Robbins

This STEMNET resource describes the background and career of STEM Ambassador Chris Robbins, a design engineer and Director of a small independent consultancy.

Chris uses maths to help companies solve problems by developing mathematical models and associated software to help select appropriate materials and processes. After gaining a first degree in Theoretical Physics, Chris became a design engineer in the nuclear industry. He then studied Mathematical Modelling before setting up his own company.

Chris is keen to encourage students to see that what they learn in school can be both fun and relevant to everyday life. “Computer games today involve a lot of maths and physics knowledge that people don’t realise they have – and at a pretty high level.”
