Catalysis

This is one of the 18 Background Books published for Stage II of the Nuffield Chemistry Sample Scheme. The books were highly illustrated and designed to be attractive. This book explores theories of catalysts and describes some industrial uses of catalysts.

There are three parts to this book:
*Part 1: The nature and uses of catalysts
An account of uses of catalysts from the time that Berzelius discovered their effect on chemical reactions in the early nineteenth century to the use of catalysts in the petrochemical industry.

*Part 2: Theories about catalysts
The effect of catalysts on reaction rates explained in terms of activation energies.

*Part 3: Biological catalysts
The nature of enzymes and the lock-and-key explanation for enzyme specificity.

This book was first published in 1967 but there is little in the account of the topic that is out-of-date but there is, of course, no mention of more recent developments in catalysis devised to enable green chemistry.
