Inside the Atom

This is one of the 18 Background Books published for Stage II of the Nuffield Chemistry Sample Scheme. The books were highly illustrated and designed to be attractive. This book describes aspects of the history of chemistry by exploring the evidence that led to modern theories of atomic structure.

There are 4 parts to this book:
*Part 1: Opening up the atom
This part starts with Dalton and describes developing understanding of atoms through the work of Thompson, Becquerel and the Curies.

*Part 2: Atoms like the solar system
This part covers in particular the work of Rutherford, Bohr and de Broglie.

*Part 3: The atomic nucleus
This part explores the work of Moseley, Aston and Chadwick.

*Part 4: Energy from the atom
In this part the story is told through the work of Cockroft, Einstein, Joliot-Curie, Seaborg and Fermi.

This book was published in 1967 but can still be used to illustrate aspects of how science works through the evolution of theories of atomic structure in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
