Petroleum

This is one of the 18 Background Books published for Stage II of the Nuffield Chemistry Sample Scheme. The books were highly illustrated and designed to be attractive. This book describes applications of chemistry in the petrochemical industry.

There are three parts to this book:
*Part 1: Petroleum and where it comes from
An account of the geological origins of petroleum, drilling for oil and transporting oil.

*Part 2: Refining the oil and getting the products
A description of the fractional distillation of oil and the conversion of some fractions to more valuable products by cracking and other methods.

*Part 3: Chemicals from petroleum
A outline, with flow diagram, of the range of chemicals and products made by the petrochemical industry. (This part covers content that is now more usually taught post-16.)

The book was first published in 1966 and so much of the detail is now out of date.
