Corrosion

This is one of the 14 Background Books published for Stage III of the Nuffield Chemistry Sample Scheme. The books were highly illustrated and designed to be attractive. This book describes applications of chemistry to solve practical problems.

There are three parts to this book:
*Part 1: What is corrosion?
The rusting of iron and the eating away of stonework and the costs to society of these processes.

*Part 2: How corrosion happens
The electrochemical explanation for the corrosion of metals, and especially iron. Factors affecting the extent of corrosion.

*Part 3: How corrosion is prevented
Alloying, protective barriers and cathodic protection with a brief mention of Pourbaix diagrams.

This book was published in 1968. Some quantities are given in Angstrom units and the photographs are dated but the essential chemistry stands. The level of treatment is more suited to a post-16 advanced course.
