Sulphuric Acid
This is one of the 14 Background Books published for Stage III of the Nuffield Chemistry Sample Scheme. The books were highly illustrated and designed to be attractive. This book describes the production and use of an industrially important acid..
There are four parts to this book:
*Part 1: A history
Methods of making sulphuric acid from the time of Al-Razi to the early days of the contact process
*Part 2: Manufacture
The lead-chamber and contact processes with flow diagrams for both.
*Part 3: Sources of sulphur dioxide
Sulphur dioxide from sulphur deposits, from metal ores and from anhydrite.
*Part 4: Uses
The uses of the acid to make rayon. to produce fertilizers, to ‘pickle’ metals and to make detergents, titanium dioxide pigments and explosives.
This book was published in 1968. The historical first chapter is still interesting but the sections on manufacture and sources of sulphur dioxide are clearly very out-of-date.
