Nuffield Advanced Chemistry: Examinations and Assessment

The Nuffield Chemistry team worked with the then London Board to develop new styles of assessment to support new approaches to teaching and learning in science first at O-level and then at A-level. Many of the approaches adopted in the 1960s have stood the test of time with the common use of a mixture of fixed response, structured and free-response questions. The main innovation at A-level was the replacement of a practical examination by a scheme of internal assessment of practical work by teachers.
