Paper planes

This group task asks students to design, build, evaluate and test paper planes.

The presentation outlines the expected outcomes and also contains teacher notes. It includes a link to a six minute BBC video about the design features involved when making paper planes.

The activity is open-ended. Although some directions are given, students should be encouraged to make and justify their own decisions about suitable mathematical and statistical approaches. If they predict a rank order of their planes then the rank correlation coefficient could be used to compare with the ranking according to their investigated results. If time of flight and distance are measured then scatter-graphs could be produced.

The separate teachers' notes give an overview of the task and suggests the use of a spreadsheet to record and analyse the data.
