Max cylinder

This Core Maths task is suitable for small group work and provides a good opportunity to demonstrate and encourage mathematical modelling.  Students investigate the minimum amount of metal needed to contain a given amount of drink in a can. They are encouraged to explore numeric, graphical and algebraic representations of the model.

The presentation can be used to introduce the topic. It provides the required formulae and a representation of a possible spreadsheet and graph of the data.

The activity sheet describes the task and guides students by posing questions for them to consider.

The teachers' notes outline the task and gives ideas for possible extension activities.
