Improving the Teaching and Learning of Mathematics

Produced by the Learning and Skills Improvement Service (LSIS), this case study looks at the theme of embedding functional skills.

Derwen College is a specialist residential college which delivers a wide range of vocational courses to students with learning difficulties and disabilities. While undertaking the vocational courses students are also taught mathematics within the vocational subject.

The aim of this project was to improve the skills and knowledge of subject staff in the teaching of mathematics.

Staff were given the opportunity to gain formal qualifications in mathematics and to attend in-house workshops in maths. In addition, a mathematics ‘link person’ was appointed within each vocational area. This self-improvement activity has increased dialogue between staff about the teaching and learning of mathematics and increased the confidence of staff in teaching the subject.
