Teaching Mental Calculation Strategies to Level Five

This booklet produced by the QCDA (formerly QCA) in collaboration with the National Strategies offers guidance on the teaching of effective mental strategies for mental calculation and the use of calculators for students who have not yet attained level five.

This booklet is designed to assist your planning by:
* listing the number facts that pupils are expected to recall rapidly;
* setting out expectations of the type of calculations pupils should be able to do;
* listing the strategies that might be taught to pupils to help them calculate accurately and efficiently;
* suggesting a range of suitable classroom activities to help pupils develop and understand calculation methods.
