Tutor Support Manual

This manual introduces teachers to the approaches adopted in the Problem Solving with Industry series, devised by the Centre for Science Education. The authors describe problem solving as a composite skill, enabling the development of a wide range of personal communication, enterprise, scientific and technological skills.

GNVQ science assessment
The manual explains how the modules could be used in courses leading to Intermediate Level qualification of GNVQ. Much of the detail in this part of the manual is no longer relevant but there are useful sections about the GRASP approach to problem solving and to the characteristics of vocational learning.

Safety and risk assessment
The manual ends with an introductory module dealing with risk assessment and also giving the students the opportunity to experience the style of the remaining Problem Solving with Industry modules in the pack. This module is based on three tasks:
* Task one – to carry out a survey of the science laboratories and record all safety points and potential hazards.
* Task two – to investigate the present safety procedures by interviewing the laboratory technician about how a practical session is normally prepared.
* Task three - to design a risk assessment form for use when doing any practical work.
