Issue 20: Games - Threading Beads

This article, from an Early Years edition of the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM) online magazine, uses beads and threading as its key activity.

Threading is a well established activity for young children and this article gives a number of suggestions as to how the mathematics can be developed through activity. To encourage the children to think about what they are doing, some pattern cards for them to copy could be prepared.

Using beads of different shapes, copying and continuing patterns, discussing similarities and differences using the beads as a focus for conversation are all discussed.

Language about, and properties of shapes, linked to sequencing and prediction can all be developed through the use of beads as suggested in these activities.
