Issue 24: Games - Feed Henry

Feed Henry, an activity from an Early Years issue of the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM) online magazine, develops ideas of patterns and corresponding mathematical language.

Henry only eats patterns. It doesn’t matter what the pattern is made from - as long as it will fit in his mouth, Henry will eat it!

When children come to feed Henry, they will need to explain their pattern. This could be in everyday language such as ‘spotty’, ‘wavy’ or ‘curly’, or in more mathematical language such as ‘circle’, ‘triangle’, ‘big’ or ‘small’. They are able to make their own patterns by cutting and sticking or threading. These may be of any type, repeating or symmetrical or just sequential.
