Issue 84: A Resource for the Classroom - Averages Mystery

Issue 84 of the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM) Secondary magazine featured an activity which was developed by a teacher looking for ways of integrating a problem-solving approach into his everyday teaching.

The activity focuses on finding the mean, mode, median and range of scores of three groups of five people in a test using a 'mystery' format. Students are given a number of clues and work in pairs. The clues are on 12 cards, one of which also outlines the task.

The resource gives a brief overview of the activity and how one particular teacher used it and the way that the students tackled it. A full set of clue cards is included but no solution.
