Shape Workshop

A booklet contains a variety of ideas and teacher inspiration for teaching shape to students of all ages. [b]The activities are:[/b] *Pictures from three and seven piece tangrams *Making polygons from the dissection of a square and a square from the dissection of a cross. *Finding different ways to colour half of a square *Using two overlapping shapes to produce a third shape *Fitting multiple images of one shape to make a larger replica tile (reptiles) *Discovering the path produced by rolling shapes *Producing patters by using linked tiles, through reflection, translation and rotation *What happens when a square is drawn inside another one *Using squared dotty paper to draw and investigate number in a spiral *Islamic designs, including drawing, printing and sewing the designs produced. *Exploring the beams from two intersecting, rotating searchlights. *Using simple rules to determine if and when four people in line would be standing up or sitting. This booklet from Manchester Polytechnic is the result of work done by groups of teachers attending an ATM workshop for students of all ages in 1985.
