Managing the Process

As part of the series Progression in Primary Maths, this Teachers TV video looks at the impact of a skills-based curriculum and advanced tracking system on student progress in mathematics.

Sue Courbet, Headteacher at Great Barr Primary School, believes that to improve progression mathematics needs to be more enjoyable for students. Staff training has encouraged teachers to incorporate speaking and listening and more practical activity into their mathematics lessons.

Senior staff, including the Mathematics Co-ordinator, are linking the school’s enquiry-based approach to learning with the new mathematics framework. Standards are being monitored through book trawls, and the Birmingham school is paying more attention to its assessment data using the RAISE online website.
