Skill 1.6 Editing a Scientific Book

These activities, produced by Gatsby Science Enhancement Programme, help students to think about collecting and presenting information.

In this activity, students compile and edit a science book by collecting news items from print and internet sources. This allows students to think about the ways that information is arranged in a science reference book and how to gather information to produce their own book.

In producing their book, students are required to consider the following components:

* Binding or cover to show the name of the book, the author or editor and the name of the publisher.
* Title page which presents the name of the book, the author or editor, the name of the publisher, date of publication, place published and edition number.
* Table of contents
* Preface or introduction
* Content arranged in chapters
* Bibliography or references to sources of information or other acknowledgements.
* Index with terms, concepts, names and page numbers where they are mentioned.
