Managing GCSE Coursework 2

This Teachers TV programme looks at ways teachers can help design and technology students take a less formulaic approach to GCSE coursework.

The two teachers shown in Managing GCSE Coursework 1, textiles teacher Lorraine John and Electronics teacher Stuart Barker, discuss their teaching strategies with Kevin Jones of the Specialist Schools Trust and Gareth Stevens, Key Stage Three Strategy Consultant from Harrow Local Education Authority.

The group debates the most effective support to enable students to take a more creative approach. Stuart believes that students learn from examining the best work from previous years, whilst Lorraine thinks this limits their creativity.

The group agrees that exam boards should reward creative approaches more directly than they do at present and feel that teachers should encourage students to be more experimental during the ‘making’ stage.
