Positive Design

In this classroom management resource from Teachers TV, John Bayley observes an outstanding design and technology teacher in her first lesson with a Year Nine class.

The video shows how she maintains discipline by rewarding good behaviour. Kelly Hall devotes just 10 seconds to the rules before teaching a double lesson on product analysis. From the outset, the Key Stage Three class learns that participation is rewarded, as every answer earns a smiley sticker and good answers gain lavish praise.

When noise levels rise the class responds quickly without the need for sanctions. The students make good progress, with four students receiving a prize for their high level answers at the end of the lesson. John notes the main features of Kelly’s teaching style: the use of praise; the fast pace; a well planned series of short and varied activities, with strict time limits, distributing questions around the class effectively and allowing no time for boredom or poor behaviour.
