Generic Grade Descriptors and Supplementary Subject
In January 2012 Ofsted implemented a new framework for inspection to be used by inspectors in the Section 5 inspection of schools and academies. At the same time Ofsted published supplementary subject-specific guidance for inspectors on making judgements during visits to schools.
The supplementary guidance aligns with the generic grade descriptions for the inspection of schools and academies. The subject-specific guidance gives criteria for the four judgements for each four areas of inspection. The four areas for judgements are:
• Grade descriptors: achievement of students in science
• Grade descriptors: the quality of teaching in science
• Grade descriptors: the curriculum in science
• Grade descriptors: quality of leadership and management of science
The levels of judgement are:
• Outstanding
• Good
• Satisfactory
• Inadequate
The criteria are designed not only for inspectors but also fro schools and teachers to use in their own evaluations of provision and outcomes. Grade descriptors are not to be used as a checklist but should be applied adopting a ‘best fit’ approach.
