KS3 Bearings

This video resource from Teachers TV features Wendy Fortescue-Hubbard who visits Coombe Dean School in Plymouth and provides ideas for practical activities which can be tailored to different ability groups.

Tony Biddle, Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT), reviews compass directions with a class of low ability Year Eight students, who then go into the school grounds and use compasses points and trundle wheels to follow a treasure trail. Meanwhile a class of higher ability Year Eight students use bearings to place triangles in the correct position before following the same trail around the school using three-figure bearings. A trip out to sea demonstrates how bearings are used in the real world and students could make an early Chinese compass themselves.
