Areas of Circles and Composite Shapes

This video resource from Teachers TV is presented by Fran and Dave, who demonstrate practical applications of mathematics as they investigate the surface area of different shapes and the cost of tiling a bathroom.

Different methods for calculating the area of the bathroom walls are explained, while graphics display plans and relevant working out. As the layout of the bathroom alters, so too does the area of the walls to be tiled.

Calculations are performed in stages throughout the video, offering a pause point for teachers to hold a freeze frame on screen while students discuss the problem and perform the calculations themselves.
