Playing Mathematically

This video resource from Teachers TV provides an insight into how Baliol School in the north of England, a residential school for boys with behavioral, emotional and social difficulties, uses the games their students play to support a rigorous mathematical curriculum. Peter Henderson, Deputy Head and mathematics teacher, has devised a scheme that finds mathematical content in the boys' social activities, such as darts and snooker, and builds on this in the classroom. Students use a dartboard to investigate number combinations and 'four in a row' to establish knowledge of coordinates. Their engagement in the mathematics lesson is clearly demonstrated, as is the link with key process and the personal learning and thinking skills.
