Quadratic Equations

This video resource, from the Teachers TV series Hard to Teach, features staff at Henry Cort Community College, which is a specialist sports college, using a cross-curricular approach to teach quadratic functions.

Video from activities on a basketball court and a design technology lesson are imported into movement analysis software, where the path of a ball is recorded and then transferred into dynamic geometry software. Students calibrate the grid of the graph with the known dimensions of the scene and plot quadratic functions which match the flight of the ball. This is purposefully done by trial and improvement to help students understand how the various coefficients affect the shape of the graph. Later the students go on to look at the science behind projectile movement.
