Skill 3.6 Going Beyond an Article: Asking Key Questions
Produced by Gatsby Science Enhancement Programme, this activity helps students to be able to:
* identify the underlying scientific principles that relate to a brief article
* formulate questions about the article
* explain key pieces of information presented in the article.
In the activity, students are first issued with an extract of an article from Catalyst magazine, targeted at GCSE students. This revises some of the basic principles behind the greenhouse effect and the role it plays in warming the Earth.
The activity then develops the principles covered at A-Level regarding the absorption of infra-red radiation by bonds in molecules of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, methane and water vapour.
The activity is structured to make this a student-led research exercise rather than a teacher-led exposition.
