Film Review

This resource, from the Nuffield Foundation, was published in the early 1970s as part of the Science Teacher Education Project (STEP). The book contains detailed reviews of over ninety films that might be used in the professional preparation of teachers at that time. The book is therefore of very limited interest today except as model for selecting and reviewing film and video resources.

Each review contains the following elements:

* A brief description of the content.
* A step by step account of the sequential structure, giving times for the various sequences where possible. (This can help the tutor before the viewing session at the planning stage, and afterwards as an aid in subsequent discussions.)
* An appraisal, preferably by someone who had used the film with students, with suggestions of its possible applications.
* Details of specification, availability, accompanying notes, and so on.

[b]Selection criteria[/b]
It was decided that a film would only be included if it featured at least one, preferably more, of the following characteristics:

* it should have relevance to science teaching
* it should show classroom situations or teaching techniques, and
* it should have a link with one of the STEP units in Activities and Experiences.

Thus, films about the science itself, rather than about the teaching of science were omitted.
