Through the Eyes of the Pupil

Through the Eyes of the Pupil, from the Nuffield Foundation, is a collection of writing by students that was published by the Science Teacher Education Project (STEP). The aim was to enrich teacher education with sets of annotated passages written by students for discussion in professional training courses.

At the time in the early 1970s, STEP was breaking new ground in trying to make a selection of writings that was provocative for such a context. This was not a collection which said 'This is how students should write', nor was it a collection tailored simply to someone's idea of the 'best' writing; rather it was one which was intended to lead to discussion. The idea was to bring out some of the problems of teaching science, and above all reveal something of how it seems from the young person’s point of view.
