War Against Pests

From The Centre for Industry Education Collaboration (CIEC), these materials help students to understand key ideas in the use of agrochemicals. These include:
* synthetic and natural pesticides
* biological control
* food chains and the management of ecosystems
* predator-prey relationships
* benefits and drawbacks of using agrochemicals
* human population and food requirements

To achieve this, students undertake a series of activities that include:
* A data interpretation exercise, based on the effect of garlic on fruit flies, which introduces the concept of natural pesticides
* Study of alternative and complementary methods of pest control, their effectiveness and dangers
* Pest control and predator-prey relationships
* Role play exercise based on an expert panel question and answer format.
