APU Mathematics Monitoring Phase 2

A report of the work of the APU between 1984 and 1988 and the results of the 1987 survey in which groups of 11 and 15 year olds were tested on a variety of aspects of their mathematical development.

The report begins with an overview of the work carried out in phase one of the project followed by an overview of the work carried out in phase two.

The report looks at a variety of aspects including; gender differences, country differences between England, Wales and Northern Ireland and changes over the time period of the study.

The mathematical skills tested are mental skills, calculator skills and estimation and measurement.

The report also considers the effects of context in questions, how students tackle problem solving and the use of microcomputers in mathematics.

The final part of the report looks at students' attitude to mathematics and compares and contrasts school and student characteristics.
