Co-ordinates

From the Nuffield Foundation, this module develops the use of co-ordinates in two and three dimensions using traditional games. It digresses into the simple use of matrices as information stores and finally, extending the work on ‘battleships’ into equations of lines and rather quickly into the solution of simultaneous equations. The co-ordinate development is entirely in the first quadrant.

The resource consists of:

*Notes for the teacher including a brief overview of the contents and answers

*Activities 1-5: playing noughts and crosses, specifying position using co-ordinates

*Activities 6-10: extension to 3D noughts and crosses, introduces matrices

*Activities 11-13: order of a matrix, simple use of matrices as information stores

*Activities 14-16: playing ‘battleships’ and variants

*Activities 17-20: using ‘battleships’ equations of straight lines are introduced

*Activities 21-24: collisions of ships on straight line courses and solving simultaneous equations.

The activities could be turned into workcards. There are brief teachers' notes which include answers to the questions in the activities.
