Maths with Professor Christopher Zeeman

This resource from Teachers TV features Professor Christopher Zeeman at the Royal Institution in London to talk about mathematics. In 1979, Professor Christopher Zeeman was the first mathematician to deliver a Royal Institution annual Christmas Lecture, which influenced many young mathematicians at the time. It was from these lectures that the Royal Institutions Maths Masterclasses for schools were developed, which now take place in different centres across the UK.

A group of teachers meet with him, to discuss how they can introduce activities within their classrooms that will engage students and develop mathematical thinking. Professor Zeeman, now aged 84, believes that students should be taught theorems and proofs, which are core elements of mathematics.

Some concerns about how well prepared students would be to deal with theorems and proofs are raised, as well as the effect this may have on examination results. Changing the attitudes of students and what they expect from lessons is key to developing engagement and enjoyment of mathematics.
