"Goodbye SATs... Hello Assessment" - Programme 2

In this Teachers TV programme, mathematics consultant Val Worcester joins Melanie Grant and Vanessa Clarke from Aston Tower, Birmingham as they reflect on the assessment activities used in their Key Stage One classes. The challenge for teachers in Key Stage One assessment is to design activities that will yield evidence about each child's ability. The programme looks at how activities help teachers actively assess. Points are made about the importance of watching the children whilst they work to gain evidence of what they know and about embedding assessment into everyday teaching. This achieves a more realistic level of where they are as the children are unaware that assessment is taking place. The importance of observing and recording children's mistakes as well as their successes is discussed as a way of setting next step targets.
