Microbes and Climate Change
This booklet, from the Microbiology Society, discusses the role microbes could play in tackling global climate change. The resource provides an overview of the effect of greenhouse gases on climate and the role of microbes in the carbon and nitrogen cycles. Carbon-fixation in cyanobacteria and the carbon-releasing activity of methanogens in ruminant animals are compared in terms of their effects on climate change. There is also a detailed description of the use of microbes in the production of biofuels and the use of genetically engineered microbes to produce biofuels from non-edible plant material.
