Mini-course 9: Choosing an Analysis - Records from the Past

This mini-course from the Nuffield Exploratory Data Skills Project: Making Sense of Data considers how to choose appropriate techniques from the earlier mini-courses. As a result of this mini-course students should learn to:

• think about data as a set of records containing fields
• know that there are different kinds of data
• know that different kinds of data suggest different kinds of analysis
• know that one set of data can be analysed in different ways
• consider looking at trends, if the data form a sequence
• consider looking at the values in batches, if the data contain an amount
• consider making a scatterplot, if the set of data has at least two numeric variables
• consider taking out effects, if there are values which are affected by more than one factor
• consider making tables of counts, if looking at the numbers of cases in different categories

The teacher guide gives an overview of the mini-course.
