Doing Their Level Best with the New Orders

This publication, produced by the Association for Science Education (ASE) in 1996, is intended to help teachers in assessing children's progress in science investigations at Key Stage Two. It considers evidence collected from teachers and includes examples of work produced by children in Year Four and Year Six.

The resource contains an outline of the investigations carried out, giving evidence from the children’s work alongside a commentary on how they approached the investigation and an analysis of the enquiry skills which were being assessed. The Year Six analysis also includes a level for the children based on the evidence given.

The examples of children’s work, together with the teachers' and authors' observations, are intended to guide teachers whilst making their own judgements about children's level of understanding in science. They also aim to help moderate assessment within and between schools.
