Aerodynamics Timeline

This activity, from the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), challenges students to put images of cars and aeroplanes in chronological order, to explain how they made their decision and describe how the products relate directly to developments in science and technology.

As the technology has developed aeroplanes and cars have become more streamlined. This is to reduce the drag on the object whilst moving and has been made possible due to:

*Improved testing techniques, such as wind tunnel development and modelling fluid flow on a computer using CFD (computational fluid dynamics)

*Developments in materials, both to reduce weight and facilitating the economic manufacture of more aerodynamic shapes

*Developments in manufacturing technology, supporting the economic manufacture of accurate, complex shapes

*Changes in the needs of users and fashion

The activity is part of the Skeleton Bob collection.
