Animal Chips

This scientific literacy activity, from the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), looks at the use of radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology, investigating extensions to the use of such technology in various contexts.

RFID technology in a microchip the size of a grain of rice can act as a communication device allowing humans to locate animals when needed. Students are asked to make ethically-based decisions about possible limits that should be imposed on RFID technology or similar electronic applications.

The debate can be extended to cover other types of identification, such as iris patterns, tattoo of an identifying bar code, or DNA fingerprints.

Curriculum links include waves, communications, electronic devices, transponders, integrated circuits, biocompatibility, RFID (Radio Frequency Identification), electromagnetic spectrum.
