Harlow Carr Maths Trail

A resource containing a collection of puzzles and problems designed to help students discover the ‘real life’ mathematics that is all around them as they visit the Royal Horticultural Society garden at Harlow Carr. The trail encourages group work and collaborative problem solving, develops observation and recording skills and reveals mathematical structure that might otherwise go unnoticed. The activity is designed to embed mathematics in a context and provides opportunity for genuine functional application and offers a set of uncontrived contextual examples that support and strengthen students’ understanding of Mathematical Processes and Applications across Key Stages Three and Four The resource consists of five separate documents: The mathematical problem solving trail booklet containing the full trail of 34 mathematical problems. The Key Stage Three trail booklet: based on the full trail but with fewer questions and more accessible content. The scavenger hunt: a series of mathematical objects to look for in the garden. This trail can be followed separately or at the same time as the mathematical problem solving trail. The maths trail map includes coordinates to locate each activity; essential to have this when following any of the trails. Teachers’ notes explaining what preparation is needed before the visit, what follow up work can be undertaken, what equipment is required, detailed notes on the mathematical coverage of each question and further information needed for the visit
