What is Urban Sustainability?

This resource, from Siemens, looks at how a sustainable city should meet the needs of the present without sacrificing the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Urban sustainability is the idea that a city can be organised without excessive reliance on the surrounding countryside and be able to power itself with renewable sources of energy. The aim of this is to create the smallest possible ecological footprint and to produce the lowest quantity of pollution possible, with efficient use of land, water and energy.

This comprehension activity introduces ideas about technological developments which can be used to find solutions to some of the problems that can arise in urban developments.
