Encouraging Reasoning Rather than ‘Answer Getting’

Linear equations: the objective of this activity is to develop skills in working with linear equations. Pairs of students are given a set of cards containing a number of linear equations. Students are asked to sort the cards into categories based upon their own criteria. Students have to justify why each equation satisfies their criteria for that category. Several questions are posed for the teacher to consider throughout the activity. The resources required for the activity are included.

Visualising 3D shapes: the objective of this activity is to develop skills in visualising and describing 3D shapes. Students are asked to draw a simple 3D shape keeping it hidden from their partner. The drawer has to describe their shape to their partner. This can be extended by asking students to draw the resultant shape when a 3D shape is cut in half. Several questions are posed for the teacher to consider throughout the activity.
