Engineer profile- Joanna Gleeson, Maintenance Engineer

In this film, from the Institute of Mechanical Engineers, Joanna Gleeson describes her job as a maintenance engineer for Corus, Europe’s second largest steel maker. There are three main processes involved in making steel: coke making, ironmaking and steelmaking. Each of these processes generates waste gases which have a value in terms of energy. These gases are collected and used around the site to generate electricity and the fuel the reheat furnaces in the rolling mills, making the site extremely energy efficient. It is Joanna’s job to maintain the gas pipes and other equipment which might deteriorate over time, making sure the gases are safely contained. Joanna explains why she loves her job and how it plays a vital role in the local economy.
