Measures of Centre and Spread: a Small Sample

This activity highlights the difficulty finding quartiles for small samples sizes as there appears to be more than one method to be found dependent upon the book being used. In this activity a sample size of 11 is chosen as finding the quartiles for this sample size is straightforward. Students are told the number of elements in the data set, the value of the interquartile range and the value of the variance and have to suggest what the values in the sample might be. The write up of the possible solutions leads to a meander through many other areas of mathematics.
