Product Moment Correlation Coefficient

This series of interactive excel sheets explore the product moment correlation coefficient (PMCC). Another title can be found in our Virtual Textbook: Secondary collection.

The first sheet generates a set of bi-variate data and plots them on a scatter graph to enable discussion. A new set of data can be generated, and the region that the value of the PMCC to lies within can be specified.

The next sheets demonstrate two methods of calculating Sxx, Syy, Sxy and the PMCC. A new set of data can be produced, and values can be revealed one at a time. The scatter graphs for the data sets can be seen on subsequent pages.

The fourth sheet contains a summary of the formulae to calculate the PMCC.

The next sheet generates a table of five sets of data from which students can calculate Sxx, Syy, Sxy and the PMCC. Answers are included.
