Year Five/Six Spring Term

This resource has been created for mixed age classes at upper primary level to support the learning of place value, negative numbers, mental addition and subtraction including money. The detailed weekly plans contain differentiated activities for the two year groups, guided tasks and details of resources required for each lesson. Objectives covered in the lessons include:

Week One

Year 5

  • Know what each digit represents in 6-digit numbers
  • Use place value to add and subtract
  • Compare numbers up to 1 million, use < and > signs
  • Place 6-digit numbers on number lines and round to the nearest 100 or 1000
  • Use negative numbers in context of temperature; calculate rises and falls in temperature

Year 6

  • Know what each digit represents in 7-digit numbers
  • Use place value to add and subtract
  • Compare numbers up to 10 million, use < and > signs
  • Place 7-digit numbers on number lines and round to the nearest 10,000, 100,000 or 1,000,000
  • Use negative numbers in context of temperature; calculate rises and falls in temperature
  • Calculate intervals across zero

Week Two

Year 5

  • Use place value to add and subtract
  • Add and subtract near multiples of 100 and 1000
  • Use counting up to subtract four digit-numbers from multiples of 1000, to find change from £100 and differences between amounts of money
  • Use column addition to add amounts of money

Year 6

  • Add and subtract near multiples of integers including decimals (e.g. +/- 0 2.99, 3.02)
  • Use knowledge of the order of operations and brackets to carry out calculations
  • Solve addition and subtraction multi-step word problems, including finding change
